The fourth bridge, connecting the peninsula to the island of Taipa, is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, according to the schedule of the tender launched by the Macau Government in 2018.
Seven consortia, comprising companies from Macau and Mainland China, competed for the design and construction of the fourth Macau-Taipa sea bridge, including the China Road and Bridge Corporation, one of the largest construction companies in the People’s Republic of China.
The new bridge, located east of the Amizade Bridge, will start at the landfill zone at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau border crossing and link to the new landfill site near the Taipa sea terminal and Macau International Airport.
According to Macauhub news the landfill area along the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge is mainly earmarked for housing.
The 3.09-kilometre-long bridge with eight lanes, two of which are exclusively for motorcycles, will have a section of 2.9 kilometres over the sea passing over the shipping lanes of vessels that dock in Macau or pass through Macau travelling towards Zhuhai and Guangdong Province.
The limited tender, by prior qualification for the contract, did not establish a price for the design and construction of the bridge and considered the possibility of companies not registered in Macau, provided that they were part of a consortium alongside entities based in the Macau Special Administrative Region.
The decision to build the fourth bridge was made in 2015 by the Macau government and approved by the central government in 2017.
Macau has three bridges connecting the peninsula to the island of Taipa, the first of which, Nobre de Carvalho Bridge, which is 2.5 kilometres long, was inaugurated in October 1974.
Twenty years later, the Portuguese authorities inaugurated the Amizade (Friendship) Bridge, which is 4.7 kilometres long.
In December 2004 the Sai Van bridge was opened, which is the third bridge between the Macau peninsula and the island of Taipa, stretching over a distance of 2.2 kilometres.(Macaunews)
