Macau, China, 17 Oct – Macau’s 63 hotels and 31 guesthouses welcomed 809,120 guests in August, the highest monthly figure on record, according to official statistics quoted by The Macau Post Daily today.
The previous record stood at 795,827 in July. August’s number of guests rose 16.3 percent year-on-year.
The number of hotel guests in August exceeded Macau ’s population, which stood at 558,100 at the end of June, by over 40 percent.
Mainlanders and Hong Kong residents accounted for 53.9 percent and 21.8 percent of Macau ’s hotel guests, respectively.
Guests’ average length of stay remained basically unchanged at just 1.4 nights.
The average occupancy rate of hotels and guesthouses rose six percentage points to 88.3 percent. The city’s 4-star hotels enjoyed the highest occupancy rate, at 92.8 percent.
In the first eight months of this year, the number of hotel guests rose 8.6 percent year-on-year to 5.59 million. The hospitality industry’s average occupancy rate stood at 83.7 percent between January and August.
Hotel guests accounted for 30.2 percent of all visitor arrivals in the first eight months.
Meanwhile, Macau ’s tourist price index (TPI) for the third quarter surged 16.7 percent year-on-year.
According to DSEC figures, the TPI of accommodation leapt 47.4 percent in the third quarter. The bureau said in a statement the TPI was mostly pushed up by rising hotel room rates and higher prices of restaurant services, food, alcoholic beverages, tobacco and gold jewellery.(MacauNews/ Tourism)
