National People’s Congress (NPC) Chairman Zhang Dejiang Tuesday praised Macau lawmakers for their achievement in safeguarding the city’s executive-led government structure, and called on them to continue supporting Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On.
The nation’s top lawmaker made the remarks during a meeting with a delegation of local lawmakers headed by Ho Iat Seng, president of the Macau Legislative Assembly, in Beijing.
Zhang also urged the city’s lawmakers to continue contributing to the successful implementation of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle.
Zhang, the third-ranked member of the Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), also said he recognized the Legislative Assembly’s role in safeguarding the rule of law. The committee is the nation’s top decision-making body.
The central government’s most senior official responsible for Macau and Hong Kong affairs also called on the lawmakers to unit all Macau people to maintain the city’s long-term stability.
The delegation briefed the 68-year-old former vice-premier on the local legislature’s work.
Zhang, a former party chief of Guangdong, praised the Legislative Assembly for playing an important role in implementing the “One Country, Two Systems” principle and the Basic Law as well as in ensuring the effective operation of Macau’s public administrative system.
Zhang expressed his hope that Macau’s lawmakers can fulfill their duties, unite people from all circles, and pool positive energy so as to support the chief executive and his team to govern in accordance with the law and create new prospects for the implementation of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle.
The concept of executive-led governance has come under attack by anti-government activists and opposition lawmakers in Hong Kong recently. (macaunews/macaupost)
