Thirty nine people have been chosen as Macau members of the 12th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), including seven newcomers one of whom is Melco Crown Entertainment Co-chairman and CEO Lawrence Ho Yau Lung, a son of nonagenarian gaming tycoon Stanley Ho Hung Sun, The Macau Post Daily reports today, citing an official announcement.
The 39 representatives were chosen by the Standing Committee of the CPPCC National Committee late last week. The CPPCC 12th National Committee – the nation’s highest advisory body – will have 2,237 members. The CPPCC National Committee will convene on March 3.
The other newcomers include Ng Siu Lai, president of the Macau General Union of Neighbourhood Associations (commonly known as Kai Fong), and Chan Kam Meng, who is a vice-chairman of the Macau Federation of Trade Unions (popularly known as Gung Luen), and former lawmaker-cum-businessman David Chow Kam Fai.
While 29 of the representatives fill up the Macau segment, the 10 other members were selected by different segments of the CPPCC such as economic, labour and social welfare.
The 39 CPPCC National Committee members from Macau comprise local politicians, businesspeople, government officials and four senior officials from the Central People’s Government Liaison Office including three of its five vice directors – Xu Ze, Li Benjun and Chan Kai Meng – as well as Foreign Ministry Commissioner in Macau Hu Zhengyue.
The reappointed members are former chief executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah, former Legislative Assembly president Susanna Chou, lawmaker-cum-developer Fong Chi Keong, lawmaker-cum-lawyer Leonel Alberto Alves, who is a member of the government’s top advisory Executive Council (ExCo), as well as four other ExCo members: Chan Meng Kam, Ma Iao Lai, Liu Chak Wan and Eddie Wong Yue Kai. The 10-member ExCo is the highest advisory body of the Macau government.
Edmund Ho is a CPPCC National Committee vice-chairman.
Secretary for Economy and Finance Francis Tam Pak Yuen continues to be the only CPPCC member among the local government’s five policy secretary.
SJM CEO Ambrose So Shu-fai was also reappointed by the standing committee of the CPPCC National Committee.
Six Macau CPPCC National Committee members were not reappointed, including 94-year-old Ma Man Kei, the father of Ma Iao Lai; 92-year-old Stanley Ho Hung-sun, the father of Lawrence Ho; 72-year-old banker Stanley Au Chong Kit; and 66-year-old former Kai Fong chairman and current ExCo spokesman Leong Heng Teng.
Former local business community leader and lawmaker Ma Man Kei has been in hospital in Beijing for several years. He is one of two CPPCC National Committee vice-chairmen from Macau.
