The environmental impact assessment of the construction of an underwater tunnel between the Macau peninsula and the island of Taipa is under public consultation until 21 June, according to the Land, Public Works and Transport Bureau.

The environmental impact study is being carried out by the Shanghai Research, Design & Research Institute Co., Ltd. under a contract signed with the design entity, CCCC Highway Consultants Co., Ltd. Macau Branch.

The underwater tunnel is located next to the Governador Nobre de Carvalho Bridge, the first linking Macau to Taipa, will be approximately 2,400 metres long, have six lanes in each direction and a speed limit of 60 kilometres per hour.

The statement issued by the bureau said that the environmental impact assessment is divided into three phases, the first consisting of the preliminary preparation, disclosure of the general situation of the project, research and analysis of the information collected by the entity responsible for assessing the environmental impact.

The second phase consists of the preparation of the preliminary version of the environmental impact assessment report and the public consultation, and the third is the publication of the final environmental impact assessment report, and the work to be carried out in the first and second phases will be published and subject to public consultation.
