Ferry operator TurboJet will be offering a maximum of 66 trips a day to and from Hong Kong and Macao from 1 May, according to media reports.

The enhanced services will include special Friday and weekend departures, with peak-time frequencies reaching every 15 minutes from Macao’s Outer Harbour and Taipa terminals.

TurboJet’s new schedule comes as Macao gears up for the Labour Day Golden Week holiday, which is expected to see a large influx of visitors.

The head of the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, said arrivals during the holiday could hit 70,000 a day, equalling or exceeding those welcomed during the Easter long weekend. Hotels are expected to reach 90 percent occupancy, she said.

Hong Kong is the second largest source of visitors for Macao after mainland China, with more than 622,000 people from the sister SAR arriving in March and some 186,000 of them staying in hotels.

Many are lured by a promotion under which tourists arriving from Hong Kong are given free return ferry or bus tickets if they spend at least one night in the territory.
