After Alvin Chau was cleared of fraud (though not a raft of other crimes), Macao’s gaming operators are no longer entitled to more than 2 billion patacas in compensation.
The sometime junket king has been acquitted of fraud but has had sentencing upheld in respect of the crimes of criminal association and illicit gambling.
Chau was given an 18-year prison sentence earlier this year after being convicted of scores of counts of fraud, criminal association and illicit gaming activities.
Officials say the move is not connected to the recent high-profile cases of disgraced junket operators Levo Chan and Alvin Chau.
The defence and the prosecution have concluded their arguments in the case that involves 80 counts of fraud, illicit gambling, and money laundering.
Several others convicted with the fallen junket operator are reportedly launching appeals as well.
Chau and five other defendants also found liable in compensation claims filed against the group by Macao government and five gaming operators.
One time king of the high rollers faces string of charges including money laundering and illegal betting involving sums up to HK$800 billion.
