Local animal protection group Anima predicts that it will have a MOP 2.5 million deficit by the end of the year due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, its president, Billy Chan Hon Keong, said on Monday.
Society for the Protection of Animals (ANIMA) President Zoe Tang told the Macau Post Daily recently that the trap-neuter-release (TNR) approach was the only way to help reduce the number of strays in Macao.
Albano Martins, founder and president of Anima Macau, will be stepping down from his position at the animal rights group this July.
The government’s 2019 honours list comprises 31 individuals and entities including seven members of its top advisory body.
Animal protection group Anima is studying the feasibility of sending the over 500 greyhounds left behind at the Canidrome to the US and Europe by charter planes, its president, Albano Martins, said.
Albano Martins explained that the MOP1.9 million in funding will sustain the association – which looks after 700 cats and dogs – until the end of June.
Anima faces annual expenses amounting to about MOP10.5 million but receives just MOP3.8 million from the local government via the Macao Foundation.
Anima said that over 100 residents had offered to temporarily look after one or two of the cats that usually stay at the group’s Cats’ Paradise, a feline shelter in Coloane, which was seriously damaged by Typhoon Hato last Wednesday.
