Vice Premier Wang Yang expressed his gratitude on Saturday to Edmund Ho Hau Wah, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), for his work on laying the foundation of Macau’s development while serving as the city’s chief executive (CE) between 1999 and 2009.
Wang also congratulated Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On on his re-election, saying the central government would officially appoint him as the next chief executive this week.
Chui’s second five-year term is slated to begin on December 20. Informed sources have told The Macau Post Daily that Chui will leave for a brief visit to Beijing on Sunday to receive his official appointment letter from the central government.
Wang spoke to Ho and Chui separately on the sidelines of the 8th APEC Tourism Ministerial Meeting before returning to the mainland. He said that the central government did not only recognise Ho’s contribution to Macau but it was also satisfied with his consultative work on Hengqin Island’s development.
The vice-premier also told Chui the fact Macau hosted the APEC meeting was due to the central government’s trust in the city, adding that the event would further cement the city’s position as a world tourism and leisure centre.
Ho thanked Wang for the central government’s support, while Chui spoke about the importance of economic diversification as the gaming industry continues to be Macau’s dominant economic force. Chui added that the government would continue to promote Macau as a platform for economic and trade ties between the mainland and Portuguese-speaking countries.(macaunews/macaupost)
